Creating Intentional Community in a Disconnected World

In a time where the average American spends over 7 hours a day on screens and loneliness rates have doubled since the 1980s, the need for real human connection has never been greater.

For part of each year, I live in a unique intentional community known as a Chautauqua—a historic social movement rooted in lifelong learning, spiritual growth, the arts, and recreation.

These communities first emerged in the 1870s, as a response to the growing disconnection and industrialization of American life. At their peak, there were hundreds across the U.S. Today, only about 20 remain—but their mission is more relevant than ever.

In the summer months, our Chautauqua comes alive with volunteer-led programming:
🎨 Art classes
🧘 Yoga (which I teach!)
🌳 Nature walks
📚 Lectures and community events

It’s like summer camp for adults—filled with collaboration, occasional disagreements, and beautiful connection. It's one of the most nourishing environments I’ve ever been part of.

While the physical space of a Chautauqua may only operate seasonally, the values it stands for are timeless.

Here’s how I carry those pillars year-round:
✅ Co-developing community events wherever I’m based
✅ Choosing spaces that value learning, art, and spiritual connection
✅ Embracing the messy beauty of collaboration in real-life relationships

And here’s why I’m sharing this with you:

You don’t have to live in a Chautauqua to build community.
You just need intention—and maybe a few texts to get started.

🌿 Host a potluck
📖 Start a book club
🚶 Invite friends on a nature walk
✨ Or simply check in with someone you care about

In an era of AI, remote work, and digital overload, it’s up to us to create the real, grounding experiences that help us feel human again.

So tell me—how are you creating community in your life right now?
I’d love to hear. you can send me an email at hello@kittygonzalez.com

Warmly,
Kitty
